Prof. Dr. med. Jochen Blum war von 2005 bis 2025 Direktor der Klinik für Unfall-, Hand- und Wiederherstellungschirurgie am Klinikum Worms (Akademisches Lehrkrankenhaus der Universität Mainz) und des Traumazentrums am Klinikum Worms. Seit dem 01.01.2016 bis zum Eintritt des regulären Ruhestandes am 1.4.2025 wurde die Position erweitert als Zentrumsleiter des Zentrums für Unfallchirurgie, Orthopädie und Handchirurgie am Klinikum Worms.
Als Chefarzt verantwortete er das gesamte Spektrum der Unfallchirurgie, orthopädischer Chirurgie und Handchirurgie, einschließlich der komplexen Polytrauma-Behandlung, aber auch des endoprothetischen Gelenkersatzes und arthroskopischer Therapien – sowohl bei degenerativen-orthopädischen als auch bei traumatischen Erkrankungen. Das Klinikum Worms ist Teil der medizinischen Studentenausbildung der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, an der Prof. Blum als außerordentlicher Professor für Unfallchirurgie tätig ist.
Bevor er 2005 zum Direktor der Abteilung für Klinik für Unfall-, Hand- und Wiederherstellungschirurgie am Klinikum Worms berufen wurde, war er viele Jahre Mitarbeiter von Prof. Dr. Pol M. Rommens an der Klinik für Unfallchirurgie der Universitätskliniken Mainz.
Prof. Blum wurde am 22. Januar 1959 in Ludwigshafen geboren. Nach dem Abitur und dem Studium in Deutschland erlernte er Geigenbau in Siena (Italien). Von 1982 bis 1988 studierte er Medizin an den Universitäten Siena (Italien) und Mainz (Deutschland). mit Studienaufenthalten in Boston (Harvard-Massachusetts General Hospital, Herzchirurgie) und London (Queen Square Hospital, Neurochirurgie). Sein Medizinstudium schloss er 1988 in Mainz mit dem Diplom und der Promotion (Dissertation über Hydrozephalus-Shuntinfektionen in der Neurochirurgie) ab.
Danach erfolgte an der Universitätsklinik Mainz die Facharztausbildung zum Chirurgen an der dortigen Klinik für Unfallchirurgie und der Klinik für Chirurgie (Univ.-Prof. Dr. G. Ritter, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Th. Junginger, Prof. Dr. P. Kempf).
Die Facharztbezeichnung Chirurgie wurde 1995 verliehen, die Facharzt-Schwerpunktbezeichnung Unfallchirurgie 1997, wo unter Univ.-Prof. Dr. P. M. Rommens 1998 die Ernennung zum Oberarzt an der Klinik für Unfallchirurgie der Universitätskliniken Mainz erfolgte.
1999 wurde die Venia legendi für das Fach „Unfallchirurgie“ als „Privatdozent“ durch den Dekan des Fachbereiches Medizin der Universität Mainz (Habilitationsschrift „Klinische und biomechanische Untersuchungen eines neuen Titan-Marknagelsystems zur Behandlung von Humerusschaftfrakturen“) vergeben, im gleichen Jahr wurde die Tätigkeit als Geschäftsführender Oberarzt und Ständiger Vertreter des Klinikdirektors Univ.-Prof. Dr. P. M. Rommens weitergeführt. 2003 wurde die Zusatzbezeichnung „Handchirurgie“ erworben.
Seine wissenschaftlichen Aktivitäten wurden maßgeblich durch seine Forschungstätigkeit im AO-Forschungslabor in Davos inspiriert, wo er noch unter Prof. Stephan Perren ein biomechanisches Studienprogramm zur Entwicklung des AO-Humerusnagels (UHN) entwickelte. Dieses Projekt führte er dort unter Prof. Toby Hayes bis 1998 durch und publizierte es in renommierten Fachzeitschriften .
Die Zusammenarbeit mit der AO besteht seit vielen Jahren. Prof. Blum engagierte sich in zahlreichen AO-Aktivitäten, unter anderem als Dozent und Vorsitzender der AO-Kurse in Davos sowie in vielen internationalen AO-Kursen in Südafrika, China, den Philippinen, Dubai, Israel, Ägypten, Slowenien, Italien, England, Österreich,den Niederlanden und regelmäßig in Deutschland.
Er organisierte jährlich die AO-Symposien zu Gelenkfrakturen in Worms und Ludwigshafen, zusammen mit Prof. Dr. Grützner von der BG-Klinik Ludwigshafen.
Prof. Blum war Hauptprüfer der AO-Multicenter-Studie zum proximalen Humerusnagel (PHN) und war zudem am Forschungsprogramm zur Entwicklung des ETN (Expert Tibia Nail) der AO beteiligt. Er ist langjähriges Mitglied der AO Deutschland und der AO Trauma.
Er war regelmäßiger Partner der AO Italien, wo Prof. Blum als Dozent und Kursleiter an verschiedenen Kursen mitwirkte und Vorträge in italienischer Sprache hielt.
Prof. Blum veröffentlichte zwei wissenschaftliche Bücher (Thieme-Verlag, Springer-Verlag) und trug zu über 30 Manuskripten in wissenschaftlichen Büchern anderer Verlage bei. Darüber hinaus hat er über 130 wissenschaftliche Publikationen verfasst und mehr als 300 wissenschaftliche Vorträge gehalten.
Im April 2025 ging er in den Ruhestand, nachdem er zuvor in der Klinik in Worms tätig war. Er ist jedoch weiterhin als unfall- und handchirurgischer Sachverständiger und als Berater für deutsche Gerichte und die Landes- und Bezirksärztekammern in Mainz aktiv.
Trauma and Hand Surgery
Prof. Dr. med. Jochen Blum was director of the orthopedic trauma services and the trauma centre at „Klinikum Worms“ from 2005 until 2025, a major clinical institution in Germany along the Rhine River.
As head of department, he was responsible for the complete spectrum of orthopedic trauma and hand surgery, including complex polytrauma management, but also in orthopedic surgery, such as endoprosthetic joint replacement, and arthroscopic therapies - in degenerative as well as trauma cases. The „Klinikum Worms“ is part of the medical education system of the „Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz“, where Prof. Blum is assoc. Professor of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery.
Before being elected as director of the orthopedic trauma services at „Klinikum Worms“ in 2005, he was for many years co-worker of Prof. Dr. Pol M. Rommens at the clinic for orthopedic trauma surgery at the university clinics in Mainz (Germany).
Prof. Blum was born on January 22, 1959, in Ludwigshafen (Germany). After high school and college in Germany he studied music and violin making in Florence and Siena (Italy). From 1982 to 1988 he studied medicine at the medical schools in Siena (I) and Mainz (D) with study periods in Boston (Harvard-Massachusetts General Hospital-Cardiac Surgery) und London (Queen Square Hospital-Neurosurgery). He received his medical diploma and doctorate (Thesis on Hydrocephalus shunt infections in Neurosurgery) 1988 in Mainz.
His training in surgery and trauma surgery he received at the University of Mainz, where he was board certified as specialist in surgery in 1995 and in trauma surgery in 1997, in hand surgery in 2003.
Prof. Blum is known as a researcher and scientist in clinical trauma sciences as well as in biomechanical trauma-related research. He received his PhD in trauma biomechanics from the University Mainz in 1999, where he was then also responsible in building up the biomechanical laboratory.
His scientific activities were inspired mainly by his research activities at the AO Research lab in Davos, where still in the period of Prof Stephan Perren he developed a biomechanical study program on the development of the AO humeral nail (UHN). This project was mainly performed then under Prof. Toby Hayes until 1998 and had been published in known scientific journals.
The collaboration with the AO had been active for all the years until today. Prof. Blum was engaged in many AO activities, including his role as faculty and chairman at the AO courses in Davos, but also in many international AO courses in South Africa, China, Philippines, Dubai, Israel, Egypt, Slovenia, Italy, England, Austria, and Netherlands and regularly in Germany.
He was organising on a yearly basis the AO-Symposia in articular fractures in Worms and Ludwigshafen, together with Prof. Dr. Grützner from the BG-Clinic Ludwigshafen.
Prof. Blum has been principal investigator of the AO-multicenter-Study on the Proximal Humerus Nail (PHN) and was also involved in the research program for the development of the ETN (Expert Tibia Nail) of the AO. He is long-years-member of AO Germany and of AO Trauma.
He was a regular partner for the AO Italy, where Prof. Blum participates as faculty and chairman at several courses, giving lectures in Italian.
Prof. Blum published two scientific books (Thieme edit., Springer edit.) and contributed more than 30 manuscripts to scientific books of other editors, furthermore than 130 scientific publications and more than 300 scientific presentations.
In April 2025 he retired from the clinic in Worms, but is still active as trauma related expert appraiser and consultant for german courts and the regional medical associations in Mainz.

Il Professore Dr. Jochen Blum è stato Direttore del Dipartimento di Traumatologia, Chirurgia della Mano e Ricostruttiva presso l'Ospedale di Worms (ospedale universitario dell'Università di Magonza/Mainz) e del Centro Traumatologico dell'Ospedale di Worms dal 2005 al 2025. Dal 1° gennaio 2016, fino al suo pensionamento, avvenuto il 1° aprile 2025, il suo incarico è stato ampliato, includendo la Direzione del Centro di Chirurgia Traumatologica, Ortopedia e Chirurgia della Mano presso l'Ospedale di Worms.
In qualità di Primario, era responsabile dell'intero spettro della chirurgia traumatologica, della chirurgia ortopedica e della chirurgia della mano, incluso il trattamento dei politraumi complessi, nonché delle protesi articolari endoprotesiche e delle terapie artroscopiche, sia per patologie ortopediche degenerative che per lesioni traumatiche. L'Ospedale di Worms fa parte del programma di formazione per studenti di medicina dell'Università Johannes Gutenberg di Magonza, dove il Professore Blum è professore associato di chirurgia traumatologica.
Prima di essere nominato Direttore del Dipartimento di Traumatologia, Chirurgia della Mano e Ricostruttiva dell'Ospedale di Worms nel 2005, ha lavorato per molti anni come ricercatore associato del Prof. Dr. Pol M. Rommens presso il Dipartimento di Chirurgia Traumatologica del Centro Medico Universitario di Magonza.
Il Prof. Blum è nato il 22 gennaio 1959 a Ludwigshafen, in Germania. Dopo il diploma di scuola superiore e gli studi universitari in Germania, si è formato come liutaio a Siena, in Italia. Dal 1982 al 1988 ha studiato medicina presso le Università di Siena (Italia) e Magonza (Germania), con tirocini clinici a Boston (Harvard-Massachusetts General Hospital, cardiochirurgia) e Londra (Queen Square Hospital, neurochirurgia). Ha completato gli studi in medicina a Magonza nel 1988, conseguendo il diploma e il dottorato (tesi sulle infezioni da shunt idrocefalico in neurochirurgia).
In seguito, ha completato la sua specializzazione in chirurgia presso il Centro Medico Universitario di Magonza, in particolare presso il Dipartimento di Chirurgia Traumatologica ed il Dipartimento di Chirurgia (Prof. Dr. G. Ritter, Prof. Dr. Th. Junginger, Prof. Dr. P. Kempf).
Ha conseguito la specializzazione in Chirurgia nel 1995 e la specializzazione in Chirurgia Traumatologica nel 1997.
Nel 1999, gli è stata concessa la venia legendi (autorizzazione all'insegnamento) nel campo della "Chirurgia Traumatologica" come "Privatdozent" (docente) dal Preside della Facoltà di Medicina dell'Università di Magonza (tesi di abilitazione: "Indagini cliniche e biomeccaniche di un nuovo sistema di chiodi endomidollari in titanio per il trattamento delle fratture della diafisi omerale"). Nello stesso anno, ha continuato la sua attività come Consulente Senior e Vicepresidente Permanente del Direttore Sanitario, Prof. Dr. P. M. Rommens. Nel 2003 ha conseguito la qualifica aggiuntiva in "Chirurgia della Mano".
La sua attività scientifica è stata notevolmente stimolata dalla sua ricerca presso l'AO Research Laboratory di Davos, dove, sotto la guida del Prof. Stephan Perren, ha sviluppato un programma di studio biomeccanico per lo sviluppo del chiodo omerale AO (UHN). Ha condotto questo progetto lì sotto la guida del Prof. Toby Hayes fino al 1998 e ha pubblicato i suoi risultati su rinomate riviste scientifiche.
La sua collaborazione con l'AO dura da molti anni. Il Professore Blum è stato attivamente coinvolto in numerose attività dell'AO, tra cui il ruolo di docente e presidente dei corsi AO a Davos, nonché in numerosi corsi internazionali AO in Sudafrica, Cina, Filippine, Dubai, Israele, Egitto, Slovenia, Italia, Inghilterra, Austria, Paesi Bassi e, regolarmente, in Germania.
Ha organizzato i simposi annuali AO sulle fratture articolari a Worms e Ludwigshafen, insieme al Professor Dr. Grützner della Clinica BG di Ludwigshafen.
Il Professore Blum è stato il ricercatore principale dello studio multicentrico AO sul chiodo omerale prossimale (PHN) e ha anche partecipato al programma di ricerca per lo sviluppo del chiodo tibiale AO Expert (ETN). È membro di lunga data di AO Germania e AO Trauma.
È stato un partner abituale di AO Italia, dove il Professore Blum ha contribuito a diversi corsi come docente e direttore di corso e ha tenuto presentazioni in italiano.
Il Professore Blum ha pubblicato due libri scientifici (Thieme Verlag, Springer-Verlag) e ha contribuito a oltre 30 manoscritti in libri scientifici pubblicati da altri editori. È inoltre autore di oltre 130 pubblicazioni scientifiche e ha tenuto più di 300 presentazioni scientifiche.
Si è ritirato nell'aprile 2025 dopo aver lavorato presso la clinica di Worms. Tuttavia, continua a svolgere la professione di perito in chirurgia traumatologica e della mano e come consulente per i tribunali tedeschi e per le associazioni mediche statali e regionali di Magonza.
